Today I’m going to tell you about a place that I love; a ideal place while you are waiting for holidays.

As you know, I grew up in the South of France, in a tiny village of Provence. Quietness and nature have rocked my childhood. Since a year, I’m in Paris. I like this city, but sometimes, I need to forget about the buildings, the cars and the noise to meet  again with the flowers, the silence andtranquility as quickly as possible in…5 minutes!

To find this place, you only need to look up in the sky.

If you look closely, you will discover an old railroad names “La promenade plantée” or “coulée verte” in French (the green corridor). It is located in the 12^th borough of Paris, “La coulée verte” starts at Bastille Opera and ends at the park of Vincennes.

During your walk, you will meet sportsmen in aerodynamic outfits, deeply concentrated but without a drop of sweat. You will also go by lovers on public benches (as in the Brassens’song), grandparents trembling and children happy to breath some fresh air. From the top of the railroad, you can have a lovely view of Paris, observe people rushing and retrospect on your life. “La coulee verte” is a good place to drop the pressure.

Oh no ! It is raining. I wear my green plastic boots and my yellow French “ciré”. It’s pathetic ! I am alone in Paris street, I am cold and I am hungry. I would prefer to drink a hot chocolate and  eat a good cake at home. Fortunately for me I am in Marais area and I meet my friend Tatiana (“It is a small world”). Like me, she is desperate, frozen and wet. But she knows a place where you can have a tea and enjoy moist cakes, Le Loir dans la théière. The name of this tearoom is inspired by Lewis Caroll novel Alice in wonderland. The place is prettily decorated, you can seat and savour you tea in confortable 70′s sofas.

Prices are not expensive, a tea and a cake, 6 euros. And if you are fond of food, every Sunday a brunch is organized !

Decide to eat food grown within 100 miles (160 km) from Paris and support local producers.

Who are locavore ?

A locavore is a person who has decided to eat food grown wthin 100 miles (160 kilometers). This new kind of consumer believes that eating locally reduces power consumption, boosts local producers and “terroirs”, and respects seasons.

This local food movement was created in America in 2005, the term was invented by Jessica Pentice, a student in San Francisco. She was inspired by research work of Tim Lang, who created the “food miles “ concept. The movement is successful in the USA, in Canada and in Europe.

Not so easy to become a locavore…

At the beginning, consumers bought fruit and vegetables to local producers. Now, the movement is better organized,  cooparatives and organizations  encourage and allow  this “farm to table movement”. Of course, it is not always easy to respect the rules of locavores in your every day life especially when you live in a city like Paris or New York. Some people critcize this movement because they think eating foreign food is imoportant to discover other cultures. They consider this movement as “extreme eating” : “the idea that this is the best way to eat, that most of our food should really come from within 100 miles, that farm-to-table produces a superior diet, is antiglobalization idiocy…” (Time.com, Joel Stein, January 2008).

This exhibition tells, through Mékong life, the stories about men and women who are living nearly the river. These pictures are a real trip stating from the delta in Vietnam to finish in the Tibet.

This exhibition crosses portraits and landscapes with sensibility and perceptiveness. Lhâm Duc Hiên explores the river with a human eye; he shows people with rich culture, people who learned to control their environment. The river is presented through the major hydraulic projects; the photograph shows how people picks up water, controls his flow and fights against salinity. These pictures show economical and cultural practices built around the river.

This exhibition is a good opportunity to take a walk and discover a deeply moving reality.
